Kefalonia Island, a Great Holiday Destination (pictures)

Kefalonia  is the largest of the Ionian Islands in western Greece. It is also a separate regional unit of the Ionian Islands region, and the only municipality of the regional unit.

An aition explaining the name of Cephallenia (Kefalonia) and reinforcing its cultural connections with Athens associates the island with the mythological figure of Cephalus, who helped Amphitryon of Mycenae in a war against the Taphians and Teleboans.

Lixouri

The main island of the regional unit is Cephalonia and has a size of 773 km2 , and the present population is 34.488. The town of Argostoli has one-third of the island's inhabitants. Lixouri is the second major settlement, and the two towns together account for almost two-thirds of the prefecture's population.

The island has a rich biodiversity, with a substantial number of endemic and rare species. Some areas have been declared a site in the European Union’s Natura 2000 network.

Ainos mountain

The island's highest mountain is Mount Ainos, with an elevation of 1628 meters, to the west-northwest are the Paliki mountains, where Lixouri is found, with other mountains including Geraneia (Gerania) and Agia Dynati. The top of Mount Ainos is covered with fir trees and is a natural park.

Tourists from all over Greece, Europe and the world visit Kefalonia. As one of the largest islands in Greece, it is well-equipped to handle the influx of tourists during the summertime and it has something to offer to everyone.

Two cultural attractions, the fishing villages of Fiscardo and Assos, and other natural attractions, including Melissani underground lake, Drogarati cave and Myrtos beach, have helped popularize Kefalonia. The film, Captain Corelli's Mandolin (2001), shot on the island itself, made Kefalonia more widely known.

There are two monasteries at the island. The Monastery of Saint Andreas Miliapidias is in Municipality of Livathous and the Monastery of Saint Gerasimos in the centre of the island is dedicated to the protector of the island Saint Gerasimos.

The castles of Cephalonia, the one of Saint Georgios which was also the capital of the island and the Castle of Assos, will introduce you to the history of the Venetian domination. Unfortunately, the earthquakes are dominant in the area and have destroyed most of the relics.
