With 515 award-winning coasts, Greece is ranked 2nd in the world among 47 countries in terms of sea water quality and bathers' service, as announced by the Hellenic Society for the Protection of Nature, national operator of the international Blue Flag program.
Greece, with 515 award-winning coasts, is ranked 2nd in the world among 47 countries.
The International Commission has awarded 3.797 coasts, 695 marinas and 67 sustainable tourism vessels this year around the world.
It is noted that this year's "Blue Flag", the most recognizable quality label for coasts, marinas and sustainable tourism vessels, completes 30 years of application in the world and in Greece.
The "Blue Flag" is the most widespread and internationally recognizable ecological quality symbol in the world. It has been awarded since 1987 to beaches and marinas that meet the rigorous award criteria. A prerequisite for awarding a Blue Flag coast is that the water quality in it is "excellent". No other quality grading, even "good", is acceptable to the Program. The award has a duration of one year.
As far as Kefalonia is concerned, it has got a blue flag for its 16 beaches, which are:
